On the unmetalled lane between Leek New Road and Heakley Hall Farm there is a small plantation which appears to be in a large garden. The plantation contains some conifer trees. In winter several hundred Jackdaws roost in these trees. Yesterday afternoon, at about 16:20 we watched Jackdaws gather from surrounding areas. They arrived in flocks of tens or twenties. Some flocks went to the roost whilst others joined other flocks which had arrived and landed in nearby trees. Eventually, after about fifteen minutes the flocks rose up together and swirled around above the roost, calling loudly as they flew. We watched this for several minutes, then as it was cold, we moved on whilst still listening to the sound of the roost circling above their night time home.
Also seen was one Willow Tit and numerous Woodpigeons which also appear to use the same plantation as a winter roost.
I first spotted this roost two or three years ago. I wonder how long that plantation has been in use as a roost?
